H2–Oh Really!

Just about 70% of the adult human body is composed of water. Interestingly, almost the exact same percentage of our Earth is covered by water. Through the years, scientists have pointed out a number of unique attributes of water that make it ideal for life as we know it to exist on Earth. The viscosity (a measure of whether a fluid is thick or runny) of water is very low, allowing the heart to push it throughout our bodies. Water is an ideal solvent, dissolving and carrying essential minerals for life. Yet it doesn’t destroy those important molecules. Water is unusual in that it expands when it freezes and contracts when it melts. This allows ice to form on the top of water bodies and insulate the aquatic life below. Otherwise lakes and rivers would freeze from the bottom up, destroying living organisms. In 2017 Michael Denton authored the book The Wonder of Water which added fresh insights regarding the importance of water to biology. He highlights the ability of water to regulate temperature on Earth, absorbing heat without becoming very hot. Water also cools us via perspiration when we can’t shed heat because the outside temperature is hotter than our bodies.

Could all of this merely be an accident? Atheists want us to believe that the unique properties of water happened along by chance, baked in some supernova and delivered to our planet via comets or asteroids. But the Bible says that God started His creative work with this amazing substance: “And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:2). A beautiful short video is now available that discusses how the unique characteristics of water point to an intelligent Designer.
