“Talking about the Tongue” – Part 1

Our tongues are something we rarely think about. They aren’t exactly attractive or meant for public display (unless you are into childish insults). But the tongue is a critically important organ that is required for speech, taste, capturing food, and especially for swallowing. It aids in food digestion by helping to break down meals. The complex tongue system, as we will review in coming weeks, is employed in different animals for specific environments and lifestyles. Creationist Jerry Bergman surveyed the evolutionary literature and concluded that not only is evidence lacking for the evolution of the tongue, but even plausible stories of its evolution do not exist. Yet the Darwinists believe the development of the tongue was a critical step to allow life to evolve from the sea to a terrestrial environment. A 2015 paper in New Scientist Journal suggests that a fish, which sucks in water to get food (kind of like we would suck on a straw), somehow evolved the first tongue to catch and move food to the back of the throat for swallowing. They admit that there is no fossil evidence for this transition and how it could have happened remains unclear. But they believe the first amphibians to walk on land somehow must have done this! James 3:5 declares the tongue to be a small part of the body. We’ll consider how important this small member is in the coming months!
