God & Time

Isaiah 57:15 states, “For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy.” What exactly does it mean that God “inhabits eternity”? It seems to be saying that God exists outside time and views the whole of space/time from His timeless abode. He is simultaneously experiencing the wonder of creation, the trauma of Calvary, and the delights of the the New Heaven & New Earth. This implies, as the British physicist Edgar Andrews states, “the intriguing concept that all time still exists.” Think about it this way. I can travel from my home in NH south through Boston and on to NY City. When I arrive in Boston, NH is past and NY is future. But this doesn’t mean NH ceased to exist. Just because we are confined to the “now” doesn’t mean the past ceased to exist. Dr. Brian Greene sets out detailed arguments to prove this and concludes, “Just as we envision all of space as really being out there, as really existing, we should also envision all of time as really being out there, as really existing too.” Thus the centuries old scriptural understanding of time is only now becoming apparent to modern science! II Peter 3:8 reminds us, “But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”
